Obituary for John Douglas Patton

John Douglas Patton
1934 – 2019
John Douglas Patton, 85, of Burnaugh, passed peacefully at Community Hospice in Ashland on Wednesday, August 28, 2019.
Born July 12, 1934 in Lawrence County, KY, John was a son of the late Ray and Mary (Price) Patton.
He enjoyed playing baseball, and fishing and swimming in the Big Sandy as a young boy. He married Sue Ann Rankin and built his home in Burnaugh, moving there to raise his family in 1960. In the 1960’s, John was a member of the Boyd County Board of Education. He was a member of the Big Sandy Lions Club with his longtime friend, Bob Wells. He had been a member of Ironworkers Local Union 769 for 63 years at the time of his death. After retiring, John cared for his wife until her passing in 1992. John built his barn and continued to raise and haul cattle, maintained his yard, and cut hay and firewood. He attended the Bear Creek United Methodist Church. Always with a hat on from his vast collection and a chew of tobacco, John was often seen at stockyards, the local flea market, breakfast at Hardees, Captain D’s and at the Burnaugh BP (Marathon) for ‘meetings’ with his buddies. He enjoyed sharing memories of growing up in Buchanan and the good ‘ole days. John liked to take walks, ride bikes, watch westerns, recycling, and whittling. Although dementia stole many memories in his final years, he often spoke of his home in Buchanan. He was often seen having lunch at the Louisa KFC and going for peanut butter milkshakes at Austin’s.
In addition to his parents and his wife, John was preceded in death by his siblings Billy Ray Patton, Patricia Thompson Nunley, Helen Copley, Ruby Hart and his nephew, Tony Copley.
Survivors include his son Billy Ray Patton, daughter Annette Patton, and Robin Douglas Patton (Melissa) and their sons Amadis, Erik and Blake. All are living in Burnaugh. Nieces and nephews include Ginger Copley, Wanda Copley, Christy Moore (James) and family, John Ray Copley, and Patton Ray Hart all of Zelda. Rodney Thompson and family live in Proctorville.
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 3, 2019, from 4pm – 9pm at Neal Funeral Home, 2409 Center Street, Catlettsburg . Graveside services will be 10am Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.
