1943 - 2019

James Harrison Coleman, 76, of Catlettsburg, passed away Monday, October 14, 2019, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, surrounded by his family.

Jim was born September 15, 1943, in Ashland, to the late James Albert and Rosemary Young Coleman. He was also preceded in death by his stepmother Veva Brown Coleman.

He graduated from Ashland High School in 1961 and studied at the Ashland Junior College. He served his country honorably during the Vietnam War, in the United States Army, earning medals as a Sharp Shooter and the National Defense Service Medal. After he returned home, he took care of his first wife, Daphne Wilcox Coleman, who passed away in 1966. He would later meet the love of his life, Brenda Alley, and they would enjoy 50 years of marriage together. He retired after 35 years from Columbia Gas Transmissions. He worked hard and taught this to his children and grandchildren. Jim enjoyed walking and woodworking.

Most importantly, Jim was a devoted Christian, telling others about Jesus everywhere he went. He had a way of getting everyone’s attention, Hoorah! Jim was a member of Ceredo Christian Baptist Church. He was also a member of Post 76 and a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1168 of Greenup.

Jim loved his family! Surviving is his adoring wife of 50 years, Brenda; their children, George Coleman, his wife Tara of Richmond, KY; and Gina Brown, her husband Tom of Ashland; six grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Jerry Coleman, his wife Sue of Inez, and a special sister in law that was like a daughter to him, Veronica Wilcox Vanover.

A Celebration of his life will be held at 5 PM, on Sunday, October 20, 2019 at the Neal Funeral Home, 2409 Center Street, in Catlettsburg. His son-in-law, Bro. Tom Brown will officiate. Military honors will be presented at 4:45, by the United States Army and Post 93 of Kenova, WV. Visiting hours will be from 3 PM until service time.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital (stjude.org) or ASPCA.org.
