Obituary for Garnet Crider Ewing

Garnet Marie Crider Ewing
1911 – 2018

Garnet Marie Crider Ewing, age 107, of Catlettsburg, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at her home.
Mrs. Ewing was born February 25, 1911 in Greenup County, KY, and moved to Catlettsburg when she was 4 or 5 months old, and has lived there for her remaining 107 years of life. She was the daughter of the late Samuel M. and Allifair Minerva Priest Crider. She was preceded in death by her husband Gardner Davis Ewing, daughter Lou Ellen Ewing, son Samuel T. Ewing; a daughter-in-law Sylvia Brooks Ewing, and granddaughter-in-law Shelley Brown Ewing.
Mrs. Ewing had a Master’s Degree in English from Morehead State University. She was an excellent student, skipping several grades and entering college when she was 16 years old. Upon her father’s death, however, she had to leave college to return to her parent’s dairy farm to help her mother. She returned to college in her fifties and completed her Master’s Degree.
When her husband Gardner lost his job at the bank during the depression, she asked her mother for the rights to pasteurize and bottle the milk from the dairy farm. She and Gardner started Hyland Dairy as a result and sold their products to the community for many years.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church all of her life and only stopped attending when she was no longer mobile. She was also a beloved Sunday School teacher.
Garnet was a wonderful investor in both stock and land, and especially in people. She was such a good investor, that her stock advisors would ask her for advice. With the proceeds from Gardner’s life insurance, she invested in and improved land. Each time she sold a lot, she would purchase stock. It is her investments that enabled her to give to an abundance of good causes, provide scholarship assistance to individuals, to give generously to her family and friends, and provide for her own care. In recognition of her position in the community, she was given a key to the City of Catlettsburg.
She created the neighborhood where her home currently is located, with streets named after family members.
She read three newspapers a day, and at least a novel a week until reading became difficult after the age of 100. She was so well read that there wasn’t a subject she wasn’t well versed in. She was well traveled, visiting several continents and touring the United States twice. She commented that the U.S, was just as beautiful as any foreign land that she had ever seen.
Her greatest love in life was her family. She was so involved with all of their lives that she made each one feel that they were her “favorite”. This is true for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a patriot and deeply loved her country.
Survivors include Garnet’s daughter Robin Ewing Stuart of Sarasota, FL; grandchildren, Tracy Moffitt Patterson (Pete), of Atlanta; Brooks Gardner Ewing (Beth) of Cincinnati, OH, William James Ewing of Russell, KY, Earle Webb Moffitt, of Sarasota, FL; great-grandchildren, Tyler Webb Moffitt (Meagan) of Denver, Nancy Ewing Frazier, of Atlanta, Trevor Davis Ewing of Cincinnati, Shelby Nicole Ewing of Cincinnati , Samuel James Ewing of Russell, and Joseph Grant Ewing of Russell; and great great grandchildren Sterling and Julian.
A Celebration of Mrs. Ewing’s life will be at 1:00pm, Saturday, December 29, 2018 at the Kilgore & Collier Funeral Home, 2702 Panola Street, Catlettsburg. Chaplain Jim Smedley will officiate. Final resting place in Catlettsburg Cemetery. Visiting hours will be 12:00pm until Service time Saturday at the Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Community Hospice, 1480 Carter Ave., Ashland, KY 41101.
